HAVE-A-GO ARCHERY
Have a go Archery is an event that we have provided to many organisers in the past. However, we are ever more keen to move into more serious re-enactment and that is why we have spent most of our time and attention on improving our encampment and creating effective new displays.
our Have a Go Range
What does our Have a Go Range Consist of?
- A large wooden castle, painted to a high standard complete with Corner Towers, a Keep, a Gatehouse and a Drawbridge., and a ringing bell.
- The castle is garded by Knights, Men at Arms and Crossbowmen who hide behind Pavises (a type of shield).
- Two large shield trees
- A ringing Bell!
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Safety is of primary concern to us when running one of these events. We have an excellent health and safety record as no one has been hurt so far but we are always mindful that accidents can and do happen!
Who can take part?
Anyone can take part in Have a Go archery but we do stipulate a minimuum participation age of 6 years. In our (very extensive) experience, children aged under 6 have difficulty grasping the basics of archery and often have a wandering attention span so we therefore feel it would be potentially hazardous to allow them to partake.
What safety measures do we have in place?
- A Health and Safety Officer (or his representative) is present at all events to oversee site safety.
- Safety Netting
- Posts and Rope - a double layer of posts and rope is used to secure the arena from wandering children or pets.
- Signage - Our arena is clearly marked out with 'danger signs' displayed at intervals.
- Site Size - We have to have a certain amount of space to carry out this activity safely. We have to back on to a 'dead area' i.e. a wall, heavy foliage cover etc. this is to prevent any stray arrows causing injury should they be fired too high.
Ideally, this site should have the following dimensions: 50 ft by 100 ft of which the shooting area is 80 by 140 feet and there is a 90 by 60 foot 'dead area' behind four 12x20 foot and two 12x10 foot safety nets. (unless there is a natural dead area behind us)
